Pursuit headtube crack, left side The crack passes through the welds for a cable stop that I ground off. Broken weld in Pursuit seat frame The crack appears to have started at the dimple (possible defect in material) adjacent to the bluest area of the weld as the crack surface in that location is darker than elsewhere around its circumference. The blue coloration is an indication of too much oxygen present during welding, leading to increased brittleness of the material. This should have prompted the welder to redo his work at the time.

Schwalbe Energizer Plus Tour sidewall failure This tear in the outer sidewall ply occurred spontaneously while riding the bike. The tire was rideable at reduced inflation pressure until I could get myself home, so i wasn't stranded. Although there is plenty of rubber left on the tread the tire had approximately 10,000km on it, so I feel that I got my money's worth.

Panaracer Minits Tough with long tear Tire blew off and ran flat on bare rim. The material looks like it was torn, which suggests that sideways force when running flat on the bare rim caused the material to fail at the tread/sidewall boundary, where the cords are weakest, like pulling on opposite sides of a creased paper. Gold Rush 203mm disk rotor clearance with chainstay Notice that the rotor has at times gouged a groove in the chainstay (that I've subsequently filed smooth and polished). The clearance with the chainstay at the edge of the rotor is about 3mm. The wear on the chainstay was observed after rear brake use that caused loud howling and vibration. I suspect the edge of the rotor moved out of plane while vibrating, causing the chainstay gouge, there being no other plausible explanation (e.g. loose bearings, rotor mount, caliper alignment) for how the edge of the rotor could move closer to the chainstay.

Ritchey Girder ISO559 rim cracked at eyelet This crack is lengthening. The black dots marked the furthest progression of these cracks upon prior inspection, but one can see now that the crack tip has traveled on the left side (away from the spoke nipple) past the dot. Conclusion: It's time to retire this rim, even though this is the only spoke hole on the rim to show cracking. Cracks get to a certain length then can suddenly grow, possibly causing complete failure of a structure, rendering this innocuous-looking crack a safety hazard.

DT Alpine III spoke broken at top nipple thread This spoke broke on a wheel subjected to extreme disk brake vibration. Usually when spokes break under these conditions they break at the elbow, but this one broke at a nipple thread. There could have been a flaw or small imperfection in the thread that allowed a crack to progress through the thickness of the spoke. Note that the dark surface has oxidized and been exposed for some time, while the light-colored metal is the thickness of spoke that broke suddenly at the time of failure.

Spoke broken at elbow from fatigue This was a DT Alpine III spoke (2.3mm diameter at the elbow), laced into a disk-braked wheel as an inbound spoke on the non-drive side. Hard disk braking cause spoke to go slack cyclically with brake vibration and screeching, leading to fatigue. The crack started at the upper left of the photo on the inside of the elbow, then propagated normal to the banding seen in the crack surface. The spoke failed when only about 1/6 of the original material remained attached, leaving a 45-degree shear failure that can be seen at the lower right.

Spoke showing signs of stress at the elbow, but not yet broken. This spoke was an inbound spoke on the non-drive side of a disk-braked wheel. The disk brake vibrated and screeched when applied hard. I believe this caused the inbound NDS spokes to momentarily go slack when the brake was vibrating. The pattern embossed on the inside of the elbow is from the spoke hole in the hub. The edge of this hole would be the location of a crack initiation, leading to spoke breakage.

Cause of bulging Kenda Kwest After cutting into the tire and peeling back the layers of cords, I discovered that a bunch of these cords had "slipped" or become unglued, allowing a section of the tire casing to "go slack", causing the tire to bulge under pressure. You can see the bare spot against the outer rubber, where the cords slipped, causing them to bunch up, slack on the right. It almost looks like the glue used to hold the cords is not strong enough or that it breaks down after time and/or use. I was able to peel back this tire casing with only moderate effort. The glue was still sticky but was not holding fast. This tire had 4200 miles on it.

Worn-out disk brake pads, Avid BB7 Worn to the metal. These pads came off the rear of my Pursuit after 1100 miles of use. On my last ride I was descending a hill while dragging the rear brake. I heard a "Clunk!" sound along with feeling something catching in the wheel or mechanism. In hindsight I think this was the end of the spring clip that got caught between the pad and rotor, and possibly the inner pad (right) shearing apart. Notice that the installation tab of the outer pad scrapes the rotor when the pad wears thin.

Schwalbe Stelvio (406x28) starting to split along seam in tread I noticed this split on the tread after a ride on which I can recall having hit a few hard bumps. The tire is old (ca. 2003), but had not been ridden until last year when I decided to "use it or lose it". Tire was a bit narrow for the front of my bike, given the weight, but it ran well at 100psi for about 2400 miles until I noticed this split. I suspect the old tire cords are not as strong as they once were, and a hard bump that might normally have been handled without damage was too much for this old tire. One can also see a few non-fatal sidewall nicks in the lower left of the photo. The tire has been replaced.

Sugino XD left crank, 170mm, cracks at spindle corners This crank had been on my bike for about two years, or 5000 miles. Already one can see cracks radiating from the corners at 6 o'clock and 3 o'clock. Since this crank has always been on a recumbent I am still riding it until I receive a replacement. Sudden failure does not usually result in a crash as it might on an upright bike, although should it fail while riding, continuing to ride with no place to support my left foot would be difficult. It's possible that a contributing factor was that the crank had been originally installed with too much torque.
