Bent fork. This fork has bent at the thinnest part of the crown on both legs. The fork legs should be in-line with the head tube. Symptoms of a bent fork are (1) heel striking the ground more frequently in corners, (2) front wheel mud-flap dragging more frequently over debris and bumps, and (3) an increasing reluctance for the bike to corner predictably at greater lean angles. If your fork looks like this, it is bent and should be replaced.

Valve separating from tube, but there is no leaking. This was a strange tube. It went flat on me while I was descending Page Mill Rd. There was no noise, just a softening tire, then flat, probably over a few minutes. When I re-inflated the tube it held air. I have this tube hanging in my garage, inflated and bulging, for several days now with no apparent loss of air. I'm suspicious that this gap at the valve leaks intermittently. I've tried wiggling the valve stem, but this doesn't cause any leaking. The only thing I can't easily simulate in the shop is to apply heat as if it were on a wheel with a hot rim. (When the tire went flat on the Page Mill descent I singed my fingertips and had to wait several minutes before I could touch the rim.

New plates welded to replace the broken tabs. A repaired part, these plates should add stiffness to the frame, keeping the two paired tubes working as one unit. The welds were not heat-treated, but if they crack again, I can weld them up again. The tabs lasted about 15k miles before they cracked through, and they were much weaker.

Worn out helmet I bought this helmet in February 1993 and have worn it daily when commuting for 10 years. The outer shell is completely broken down by uV rays, but the styrofoam appears still to be in good shape. The Third-Eye mirror is held together with tape and glue.

Damaged races on a Shimano 105 rear hub. The wheel built around this hub sat idle for several months without use. The damage appears to be cosmetic and cannot be felt with a fingernail, probably some stain due to bearing corrosion from moisture rather than scoring or microwelds.

Elongated mounting hole for Gold Rush intermediate tensioner cage This cage, made of aluminum, wears primarily when this mounting hole becomes elongated. This causes the cage to twist on its mount and the chain to rub on the cage, as one can see in the picture.

Melted battery charge connector This connector shorted out while I was charging my NiCd battery pack with a DeWalt NiCd charger. It started melting and giving off smoke after a few minutes. Fortunately, I was nearby so that I could shut it off.
