Why did the chicken cross the road? This big rooster seemed unperturbed by my stopping to snap his photo a few times. He was happily clucking and pecking at the side of the road, then moved out into the center as I approached, looking up at me a few times while I fumbled with my camera. Reminds me of Hawaii where loose chickens can be seen everywhere.

Dead Baby Ground Squirrel (2) At first I thought I was looking at a lost child's toy. It was lying in the middle of the trail. How did it get from a squirrel burrow to the trail.

Strange bug caught on kitchen window blind This bug flew inside the house when I opened the door at dusk. It landed on the kitchen blind and was easily caught in a jar. It seemed to be stunned or half-asleep when I caught it. Please leave a comment below if you know what kind of bug it is.

Cottontail rabbit. Seen in Arastradero Preserve. A hawk had just caught this rabbit, then released it, so it didn't run from me until I got within 6 feet of it. The hawk had perched on a tree a few hundred yards away and was surely going to come retrieve his meal when we left, so I tried to coax the rabbit to at least run into bushes to escape the eyes of the hawk, but it ran instead toward the road. In the end I had to let nature take its course.

An opossum on the fence This little fella visits my yard regularly. When I have my window open in the evening I can hear him come through, rustling the leaves in the planters. Usually he (or she) runs off before I can snap a photo. This time he must have felt secure enough up on the fence that he froze while I snapped away.
