I'm trying to figure out how it got so big in my house--probably eating all the other spiders and insects that found their way in. I awoke to find this one about a foot above my head while I was lying in bed. I caught him in a jar and took him out to the backyard.
If you look closely or open the full-size version you can clearly see his head, eyes, and (frowning) mouth.

Redwood Spider on end of redwood leaf. When alarmed this spider had a rather ingenious disguise: it would crawl up to the nearest redwood leaf to which it had attached its web and curl up into something approximating a redwood cone.
